Catching Development Program

The catcher is the backbone of the defense—and our catching program is designed to develop smart, athletic, technically sound catchers who can control the game. Using the same teaching methods and player-development principles applied in professional baseball, the 216 Academy coaches guide athletes through the full spectrum of modern catching skills.

1. Initial Catching Evaluation

Every athlete begins with a structured assessment that includes:

  • Receiving and framing technique
  • Blocking mechanics and lateral movement
  • Transfer speed and throwing mechanics
  • Pop time measurement
  • Mobility and stability screening

This gives each catcher a clear developmental roadmap tailored to their needs.

2. Receiving, Framing & Glove Skills

Modern catching starts with receiving, and we teach techniques that help catchers:

  • Present the ball more quietly and consistently
  • Improve pocket awareness
  • Maximize strike-stealing opportunities
  • Maintain balance and posture behind the plate

Players learn efficient glove actions used at the college and pro levels.

3. Blocking Technique & Lateral Mobility

Catchers are taught to block with confidence and control by working on:

  • Proper angles and body positioning
  • Reading pitch trajectory
  • Quick lateral movement
  • Clean recoveries to throwing positions

The goal is to build durable catchers who can neutralize the running game and avoid extra bases.

4. Throwing Mechanics & Pop-Time Development

We teach efficient footwork and transfers to help catchers improve their quickness and accuracy, focusing on:

  • Footwork patterns for all throw types
  • Faster, cleaner ball exchanges
  • Efficient throwing mechanics
  • Target accuracy and arm-strength building

Athletes track pop-time improvements throughout the program.

5. Leadership, Game IQ & Pitch-Calling Skills

Catchers are trained to control the pace and flow of the game through:

  • Situational awareness
  • Pitch-calling concepts
  • Mound-visit communication
  • Managing pitchers’ strengths and weaknesses
  • Defensive positioning and strategy

This builds confidence and leadership behind the plate.

6. Game-Like Reps & Pressure Simulation

Catchers receive realistic training environments including:

  • Live receiving off pitchers or machines
  • Blocking in random pitch sequences
  • Throwing in timed, game-like situations
  • Decision-making under pressure

These reps prepare players for real-game performance.

7. Progress Tracking & Re-Assessment

At the end of each training cycle, athletes are re-evaluated on:

  • Pop time
  • Receiving quality
  • Blocking success rate
  • Transfer efficiency
  • Decision-making and game IQ

This gives players and parents a clear view of growth and next steps.

The Goal

To develop confident, complete catchers who are skilled in all aspects of the position, receiving, blocking, throwing, leadership, and game management. Whether preparing for the next level or building foundational skills, the 216 Academy program produces catchers who make an immediate impact on their team.
